I make wands because I love fantasy. I read dozens of fantasy books each year, and when I moved to Germany to study at Ludwig Maximillian University in Munich, the only books in English that I took with me were the Tolkien Trilogy. I also greatly enjoy watching most movies involving magic.

I also make wands because I love working with wood and gemstones. For example, there is nothing more surprisingly restful than using a wood lathe and seeing the shavings spiral off the spinning wood. It is also very fulfilling to watch a new wand appear as if by magic from within the blocks of wand wood. I especially enjoy rubbing the well-sanded wand with tung oil and watching the wood's beautiful grain burst forth. I also love working with real gemstones, enjoying their beauty as I select them just the right stones for the tips and end caps of the wands.

My wands are commonly purchased by Pagans, Wiccans, and Druids who use them in their rituals and worship. I have been told that they have excellent energy. Perhaps this is because I carefully handcraft each unique wand from traditional woods, actual gemstones, and natural tung oil. I never make my wands from "resins", glass or plastic jewels, or use oil-based plastic finishes such as polyurethane.

However, although I love the idea of magic, that does not mean that I personally believe it exists. As a secular humanist who puts his trust in science and engineering, I do not believe in the supernatural in any of its numerous guises. I therefore believe that whatever magic my wands produce is in the minds and imagination of their owners.

In other words, my wands are primarily for purposes of personal enjoyment. The same holds true for my book Magical Wands - A Cornucopia of Wand Lore as well as the information on wands, magic, spell casting, magical creatures and woods, and mystical crystals and metals on this website. My wands are intended for others like me who love fantasy. They are for those who would like to imagine themselves as witches or wizards, for fantasy gamers, for those who would like a "real" magic wand as part of their halloween costume, and for those who want to dress up for their visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ at Universal's theme parks (which, by the way, I highly recommend. I’m still bummed out that I can’t buy butterbeer™ outside of the park).

Finally, do not rely on the "healing" spells in the book if you are sick. See a real doctor, for the most you can hope for using these wands is the placebo effect. Finally, I strongly urge you not to step off the roof of your house while pointing a wand at yourself and intoning the flying spells: Volatilis or Pendeo. Instead, might I suggest you curl up in your favorite comfortable chair with one of your well-worn books by JK Rowling or Tolkien? You will stay both healthier and happier if you keep your feet planted firmly on the ground, even when your head is soaring through the clouds of imagination.
